Blocked chakra signs: underactive vs overactive chakras
A "blocked" chakra shows in what it does to your life: the body, emotions and relationships linked to that chakra become difficult. But there are two kinds of blockage. An underactive chakra lacks energy (you shut down, you avoid). An overactive chakra has too much (you control, you overdo it). The signs are almost opposite, and so are the remedies.
At ChakraDuo, we never simply call a chakra "blocked": each one is read as underactive, balanced or overactive, because the signs of a blocked chakra are not the same in both cases.
Knowing which direction a chakra is off balance is the key: it's what lets you choose the right practices afterwards (see our guide to balancing your chakras).

Underactive or overactive: the difference in one sentence
- Underactive: "I can't do it, I don't dare, I don't feel like it."
- Overactive: "I can't stop, I have to control everything, I overdo it."
The same person can have one chakra underactive and another overactive. It's actually common: someone who controls everything at work (overactive solar plexus) may struggle to express emotions (underactive sacral).
The signs, chakra by chakra
Root (security, money, body)
- Underactive: fear of lack, never feeling settled, trouble managing money, physical fatigue, cold or heavy feet and legs.
- Overactive: need to plan everything, fear of change, hoarding objects or savings, rigidity, tension in the lower back.
Sacral (emotions, pleasure, creativity)
- Underactive: emotions that feel switched off, little desire, trouble enjoying yourself, lack of ideas.
- Overactive: overflowing emotions, mood swings, constant search for pleasure (food, shopping, screens), enmeshed relationships.
Solar plexus (confidence, willpower, decisions)
- Underactive: indecision, procrastination, fear of failure, letting others decide for you, a "knotted" stomach.
- Overactive: need to dominate, quick anger, perfectionism, exhaustion from trying to carry everything.
Heart (love given and received)
- Underactive: self-protection, keeping others at a distance, trouble trusting, feeling lonely even when surrounded.
- Overactive: giving endlessly, forgetting yourself, needing to be loved at all costs, trouble saying no.
Throat (expression, listening)
- Underactive: not daring to speak up, staying silent to avoid conflict, a tight voice or throat.
- Overactive: talking a lot, interrupting, poor listening, saying hurtful things in the heat of the moment.
Third eye (intuition, clarity)
- Underactive: lack of vision, trouble projecting yourself into the future, ignoring your intuition, confusion.
- Overactive: overthinking, overanalyzing, trouble falling asleep because your mind keeps racing, living in your head more than your body.
Crown (meaning, values, spirituality)
- Underactive: loss of meaning, cynicism, feeling that nothing matters.
- Overactive: disconnecting from daily life, escaping problems through spirituality, feeling "above" material things.
Quick self-test: is one of your chakras blocked?
For each chakra, read the two lines of signs above and score:
- 0 if no sign speaks to you;
- 1 if one or two signs sometimes sound like you;
- 2 if several signs often sound like you.
Do it separately for "underactive" and "overactive". A chakra scoring 2 on one side is a priority. A chakra scoring 1 on both sides swings back and forth between excess and lack depending on the period, a sign it lacks stability.
This quick test gives you a first idea. Our full test asks concrete questions about your daily life, takes your backstage causes into account (sleep, stress, past…) and gives you a confidence score for each chakra.
Misleading signs
Stress looks like an overactive chakra. A busy period makes you irritable and restless. If the signs appeared with a recent overload, ease the cause first rather than "working on the chakra".
Fatigue looks like an underactive chakra. Someone who sleeps badly seems flat everywhere. Before drawing conclusions, look at your sleep.
Excess sometimes hides a lack. Someone who talks nonstop (overactive throat) sometimes doesn't dare say what really matters. Someone who gives too much (overactive heart) often struggles to receive. Ask yourself what the excess helps you avoid feeling.
What the people around you say
Others often see our imbalances before we do. A few phrases worth noticing:
- "You never stop": overactive solar plexus or root.
- "We never know what you think": underactive throat.
- "You're too nice": overactive heart.
- "You're always lost in thought": overactive third eye.
- "You don't feel like doing anything lately": underactive sacral.
In a couple, these phrases take on another dimension: when one overflows where the other withdraws, you may be in a false balance.
When to see a professional
The signs above are prompts for reflection. If you feel sadness lasting more than two weeks, anxiety that keeps you from living normally, persistent physical pain or dark thoughts, see a doctor or a therapist. Chakras never replace medical advice.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a chakra is blocked?
Look at the area of life it relates to. If it weighs on you, ask whether you lack energy (underactive) or overdo it (overactive), then compare with the signs in this article.
Can several chakras be blocked at once?
Yes, it's common. One imbalance often leads to another. Start with the one that weighs most on your daily life.
Can a chakra be both underactive and overactive?
It can swing between the two depending on the period, which shows it lacks stability. The goal is then to stabilize it, not to stimulate or slow it down.
What are the physical symptoms of a blocked chakra?
Tradition links each chakra to an area of the body (lower back for the root, throat for the throat…). But a physical symptom should always be checked by a doctor first.
