Third eye chakra (Ajna): the chakra of intuition and vision
The third eye chakra, or Ajna, is the sixth of the seven chakras. It sits between the eyebrows and governs intuition, mental clarity and the ability to picture the future. When it is balanced, it gives clear vision and confident choices; underactive, you lack perspective and direction; overactive, you live in your thoughts, dreams or scenarios at the expense of reality.
At ChakraDuo, the third eye chakra is read from concrete questions about your intuition, your clarity of mind and your racing thoughts, then then rated as underactive, balanced or overactive, with practices suited to each case. In a couple, it is also compared with your partner's.
It is the chakra of "seeing": seeing clearly within, seeing where you are going.
Third eye chakra at a glance
| Sanskrit name | Ajna, "command" or "perception" |
| Location | Between the eyebrows, in the middle of the forehead |
| Color | Indigo |
| Element | Light (in the modern tradition); the mind, beyond the five elements, in the Indian texts |
| Seed sound | OM |
| Lotus petals | 2 |
| Traditionally associated organs | Eyes, pituitary gland, as well as the forehead and nervous system |
| Life themes | Intuition, clarity, vision of the future, imagination, perspective |
In the Indian texts, this is where the two energy channels that wind around the spine meet: ida (calm, the moon) and pingala (action, the sun). The name and sound come especially from The Description of the Six Chakras (1577), translated by Arthur Avalon; the indigo color comes from the modern West (see the origin of chakras).
What the third eye chakra does in daily life
The third eye answers the question: "Do I see clearly, and do I know where I'm going?" You find it in:
- intuition: sensing what is right before you can explain it;
- clarity: stepping back and seeing the whole picture;
- vision: projecting yourself, imagining the future, setting a course;
- imagination: dreaming, creating images, ideas, projects.
Signs of an underactive third eye
An underactive third eye is a lack of perspective that blurs your vision.
- In the body: mental fatigue, a heavy head, trouble concentrating.
- In your emotions: confusion, a feeling of going in circles, fear of the future.
- In daily life: you live day to day with no direction; you hesitate between options without being able to choose.
- In relationships: you rely on others rather than your own sense of things, and find it hard to picture a shared project.
Signs of an overactive third eye
An overactive third eye is a mind that won't stop spinning: imagination and analysis take over from reality.
- In the body: headaches, trouble falling asleep because thoughts keep racing.
- In your emotions: rumination, worst-case scenarios, anxiety.
- In daily life: lots of ideas, little action; you analyze everything, then overanalyze.
- In relationships: you interpret and assume what the other person thinks instead of asking.

A balanced third eye
A balanced third eye shows up as clear, grounded vision: you have intuitions and check them, you dream and you move forward, you step back without escaping the present. Choices feel simpler, because you know what matters.
The third eye in a relationship
In a couple, the third eye is shared vision: where are you going together, what projects, what future?
- Both underactive: the couple lives day to day. All is well, but you don't really know what you are moving toward.
- Both overactive: lots of dreams and plans, few achievements. The couple lives more in the future than in the present.
- One underactive, the other overactive: one dreams and plans, the other follows without really buying in. It can be a false balance: the project belongs to only one of you (see false balance in couples).
A simple habit for the couple: write your shared one-year vision together, in three sentences. And if you have too many projects: pick just one and give it a concrete, dated first step. If you feel you are each going your own way, see the signs of a couple drifting apart.
How to open and balance the third eye
An underactive third eye needs perspective and vision; an overactive third eye needs to come back to reality.
Yoga pose: child's pose
Kneel, sit back on your heels, then fold forward until your forehead rests on the floor, arms alongside your body or stretched out in front. The contact of the forehead with the floor calms the mind. Stay for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Underactive: finish seated, eyes closed, visualizing a goal that matters to you.
- Overactive: take long exhales and stay longer when thoughts keep racing.

Breathing
- Underactive: sit up straight, eyes closed, bring your attention between your eyebrows for a few minutes and repeat the sound "OM".
- Overactive: 5 to 10 minutes of mindful breathing in the morning, counting your exhales. Box breathing (free guided exercise) is also very effective against rumination.
Daily habits
If your third eye is underactive:
- Take 10 minutes a week to write where you want to be in a year.
- Keep a journal of dreams and intuitions, and reread it every month.
- For a few minutes a day, observe your thoughts without judging them.
- Ask someone close what they see in you, and listen without defending yourself.
- Before a decision, ask yourself what your intuition says, then check it.
If your third eye is overactive:
- Turn one idea into a concrete action this week.
- Limit screens in the evening so your mind can settle before sleep.
- Check your assumptions by asking directly.
- Take up a hands-on hobby (gardening, cooking, DIY).
- Work on grounding: walking, feet on the floor, root vegetables on the menu. See our guide to grounding when you live in your head.
Affirmations
- Underactive: "I trust my inner wisdom."
- Overactive: "Reality is my anchor."
A reminder: if rumination keeps you from sleeping for weeks, or if anxiety becomes overwhelming, talk to a doctor or psychologist. Also read our article on sleep and the chakras. Chakra work is a support, not a treatment.
Frequently asked questions
How does the third eye chakra affect a relationship?
The third eye chakra shapes a couple's shared vision: where you are heading together and which plans carry you. When balanced, it gives a common direction and plans that move forward. Underactive, the couple lives day to day with no clear course; overactive, it dreams a lot and achieves little. See how all seven chakras combine between two people in chakras for couples.
How do I open my third eye?
Through simple, regular practices: a few minutes of meditation with your attention between the eyebrows, a journal of intuitions, child's pose, and time to reflect on your direction. Opening the third eye is nothing spectacular: above all, it means seeing your life more clearly.
What is the link between the third eye and the pineal gland?
Modern traditions often associate the third eye with the pineal gland or the pituitary gland, two small glands in the brain. This is a symbolic correspondence that appeared in the West in the 20th century, not a scientific discovery.
What color is the third eye chakra?
Indigo, in the modern tradition. In the Indian texts, its lotus is white, with only two petals.
Why do my thoughts go round in circles?
In the chakra reading, it is the typical sign of an overactive third eye, often with a root chakra lacking grounding: too much energy in the head, not enough in the body. Moving, breathing slowly and taking action help break the loop.
