Sacral chakra (Svadhisthana): the chakra of emotions and pleasure
The sacral chakra, or Svadhisthana, is the second of the seven chakras. It sits in the lower belly, a few inches below the navel, and governs emotions, pleasure, desire and creativity. When it is balanced, it gives you a zest for life and the ability to feel; when it is not, emotions either shut down or overflow.
At ChakraDuo, the sacral chakra is read from concrete questions about your emotions, your pleasure and your desire, then then rated as underactive, balanced or overactive, with practices suited to each case. In a couple, it is also compared with your partner's.
If the root chakra asks "Am I safe?", the sacral chakra asks "What do I feel, and what do I want?". It is the chakra of the joy of living.
Sacral chakra at a glance
| Sanskrit name | Svadhisthana, "one's own abode" |
| Location | Lower belly, below the navel, in the pelvis |
| Color | Orange |
| Element | Water |
| Seed sound | VAM |
| Lotus petals | 6 |
| Traditionally associated organs | Kidneys, bladder, reproductive organs, pelvis |
| Life themes | Emotions, pleasure, desire, sensuality, creativity, spontaneity |
The element of water says it well: emotions need to flow. Still water goes stagnant, overflowing water sweeps everything away. The name, sound and element come from Indian texts, especially The Description of the Six Chakras (1577), translated by Arthur Avalon; the orange color comes from the modern West (see the origin of chakras).
What the sacral chakra does in daily life
The sacral chakra shows up wherever you feel:
- emotions: welcoming them, living them, letting them pass;
- pleasure: savoring a meal, a moment, a song, without guilt;
- desire and sensuality: feeling alive in your body;
- creativity: cooking, making, writing, dancing, inventing your life.
It is often affected after a long period of stress or duty, when you "function" without feeling anything, or after a romantic disappointment.
Signs of an underactive sacral chakra
An underactive sacral chakra means emotions and desires are on standby.
- In the body: low energy, stiffness in the pelvis and lower back, low desire.
- In your emotions: emptiness or boredom, "flat" emotions, trouble crying or laughing freely.
- In daily life: everything is useful, nothing is enjoyable; you no longer allow yourself pleasure for its own sake.
- In relationships: trouble letting go, playing, sharing intimacy.
Signs of an overactive sacral chakra
An overactive sacral chakra means emotions and cravings overflow and take the wheel.
- In the body: restlessness, a need for strong sensations, trouble settling down.
- In your emotions: mood swings, reacting in the heat of the moment, jealousy.
- In daily life: compulsive comforts (sugar, screens, shopping), instant gratification, addictions.
- In relationships: a constant need for intensity, passionate but unstable relationships.

A balanced sacral chakra
A balanced sacral chakra shows up as flowing emotions: you feel fully without being overwhelmed. You enjoy pleasure without excess, keep a sense of play and spontaneity, and creativity finds its place naturally. It is a source of simple, everyday joy.
The sacral chakra in a relationship
In a couple, the sacral chakra touches desire, tenderness, play and intimacy.
- Both underactive: the couple works well, but like roommates. Logistics has replaced shared pleasure.
- Both overactive: lots of passion, but also heated arguments and jealousy. The couple lives at the pace of its emotions.
- One underactive, the other overactive: one waits, the other withdraws. Desire is not mutual and both feel misunderstood. It is a common false balance: the couple holds together, but one partner often suffers in silence (see false balance in couples).
A simple habit for the couple: one moment of tenderness or play each week, with no screens and no logistics. For more ideas, read our 7 rituals for two. And if distance is growing between you, see the signs of a couple drifting apart.
How to balance the sacral chakra
An underactive sacral chakra needs to be awakened; an overactive sacral chakra needs to be soothed.
Yoga pose: butterfly pose
Sit with the soles of your feet together, knees falling outward, back straight. Hold your feet with your hands. Stay for 5 to 10 breaths.
- Underactive: gently flap your knees in rhythm, like wings, to get the pelvis moving again.
- Overactive: stay still and breathe slowly to calm the restlessness.
More poses for each chakra: yoga poses for the chakras.
Breathing
- Underactive: breathe into your lower belly, letting it expand, with small movements of the pelvis; repeat the sound "VAM" as you breathe out.
- Overactive: make the exhale longer than the inhale (4 counts in, 6 to 8 out). It is the fastest way to bring an emotion down.

Daily habits
If your sacral chakra is underactive:
- Schedule one activity each week purely for pleasure, with no goal.
- Dance for 5 minutes to music you love, without trying to dance well.
- Give yourself a moment with water: a bath, a swim, a walk in the rain.
- Share one emotion with someone close each day, even a small one.
- Explore your desires and sensuality at your own pace, in a setting where you feel safe.
If your sacral chakra is overactive:
- Notice your compulsive comforts (sugar, screens, shopping) and wait 10 minutes before giving in.
- Before reacting in the heat of the moment, name the emotion ("I'm angry") and postpone the conversation if needed.
- Note what triggers your strong emotions, without judging yourself.
- Spend a calm moment in nature to bring the intensity down.
- Keep activities of your own, so you don't expect everything from the relationship.
Affirmations
- Underactive: "I deserve pleasure and joy."
- Overactive: "I welcome my emotions without letting them rule me."
A reminder: if an addiction (alcohol, gambling, shopping, screens) becomes hard to control, or if an emotional emptiness lasts for weeks, talk to a professional (doctor, psychologist, addiction specialist). Chakra work is a support, not a treatment.
Frequently asked questions
How does the sacral chakra affect a relationship?
The sacral chakra shapes desire, tenderness, play and intimacy in a couple. When balanced, it keeps the pleasure of being together alive. Underactive, the couple slides into living like roommates; overactive, life follows the ups and downs of emotions, heated arguments and jealousy. See how all seven chakras combine between two people in chakras for couples.
How do I unblock my sacral chakra?
Bring pleasure and movement back into your life: one activity just for fun each week, dancing, time with water, and butterfly pose. Most importantly, start feeling again, with no performance goal.
What is the link between the sacral chakra and sexuality?
The sacral chakra governs desire and sensuality, but not only: it covers everything that brings pleasure and joy. Low desire can come from an underactive sacral chakra, but also from fatigue, stress or a medical cause; a doctor can help you tell the difference.
What color is the sacral chakra?
Orange, in the modern tradition. In the Indian texts, its lotus is vermilion, with a white crescent moon that symbolizes water.
Why do my emotions overflow?
It is often the sign of an overactive sacral chakra, especially when the root chakra (safety) is fragile: without a stable base, emotions take up all the room. Working on grounding then helps as much as working on the sacral chakra itself.
