Throat chakra (Vishuddha): the chakra of speaking and listening
The throat chakra, or Vishuddha, is the fifth of the seven chakras. It sits at the throat and governs self-expression: saying what you think and feel, but also listening. When it is balanced, it allows clear speech and real listening; underactive, words get stuck; overactive, speech overflows and listening is lacking.
At ChakraDuo, the throat chakra is read from concrete questions about the way you express yourself and listen, then then rated as underactive, balanced or overactive, with practices suited to each case. In a couple, it is also compared with your partner's.
It is the first of the "upper" chakras: the one that brings what lives inside out into the world.
Throat chakra at a glance
| Sanskrit name | Vishuddha, "very pure" (purification) |
| Location | At the throat, at the base of the neck |
| Color | Light blue |
| Element | Ether (space) |
| Seed sound | HAM |

Ether, or space, is the element through which sound travels: this chakra is about what passes between you and others. The name, sound and element come from Indian texts, especially The Description of the Six Chakras (1577), translated by Arthur Avalon; the light blue color comes from the modern West (see the origin of chakras).
What the throat chakra does in daily life
The throat chakra answers the question: "Do I say what is true for me, and do I hear the other person?" You find it in:
- expression: daring to state a need, a disagreement, an emotion;
- listening: letting the other person finish, understanding before answering;
- sincerity: matching your words to what you think;
- creativity through words: writing, singing, storytelling.
We talk about a "lump in the throat" when we hold back what we would like to say.
Signs of an underactive throat chakra
An underactive throat chakra means words get stuck and the unsaid piles up.
- In the body: a tight throat, a weak or cracking voice, tension in the neck and jaw.
- In your emotions: fear of bothering people, fear of conflict, frustration at not being heard.
- In daily life: you swallow your remarks, you say yes while thinking no.
- In relationships: unspoken things build up, then come out all at once one day.
Signs of an overactive throat chakra
An overactive throat chakra is speech that overflows while listening is missing.
- In the body: you talk fast and loud, your voice gets tired.
- In your emotions: a need to have the last word, impatience when others speak.
- In daily life: you interrupt, you prepare your answer instead of listening.
- In relationships: a sharp tone, criticism; others feel judged or unheard.

A balanced throat chakra
A balanced throat chakra shows up as honest, balanced speech: you say what matters, simply, at the right time, and you really listen to the answer. You can disagree without hurting, and hear criticism without falling apart.
The throat chakra in a relationship
In a couple, the throat chakra is communication: how you talk, listen and settle disagreements.
- Both underactive: the couple is calm, but the unsaid accumulates. One day, a detail makes everything explode.
- Both overactive: everyone talks, nobody listens. Discussions go in circles or quickly escalate.
- One underactive, the other overactive: one talks, the other stays quiet. You think "everything is fine" because there are no fights, but it is often a false balance: the quiet one keeps piling things up (see false balance in couples).
A simple habit for the couple: a weekly talking ritual, where each person speaks for 10 minutes without interruption while the other listens and reflects back. And when voices rise: a pause, then pick it up later. To go further, our guide on how to communicate better in a relationship gives 7 concrete techniques.
How to unblock and balance the throat chakra
An underactive throat chakra needs to express itself; an overactive throat chakra needs to learn silence and listening.
Yoga pose: supported fish pose
Lie on your back with a cushion or rolled blanket under your upper back, your head gently resting back, throat open. Stay for 1 to 2 minutes, breathing calmly.
- Underactive: hum softly on each exhale, feeling the vibration in your throat.
- Overactive: stay silent and listen to your breath.

Breathing
- Underactive: ujjayi, or "ocean breath": a slightly narrowed throat, breathing through the nose with a soft wave-like sound. 5 minutes a day, then repeat the sound "HAM".
- Overactive: breathe slowly through the nose with a relaxed neck, and listen to the sounds around you for 3 minutes without naming them.

Daily habits
If your throat chakra is underactive:
- Each day, write down what you didn't say, then choose one thing to actually say.
- Express one need a week in the form "I would like…".
- Sing: in the shower, in the car, in a choir.
- Express through writing, drawing or dance what can't yet be put into words.
- Start disagreements with "I" rather than "you".
If your throat chakra is overactive:
- Give yourself 10 minutes of silence a day.
- Reflect back what the other person just said before answering.
- Let others finish without preparing your reply.
- Choose your words: one idea at a time.
- Don't settle disagreements in front of others or in heated text messages.
Affirmations
- Underactive: "I express myself with ease and clarity."
- Overactive: "I listen as much as I speak."
A reminder: throat discomfort, hoarseness or a lump that lasts several weeks should be seen by a doctor. Chakra work is a support, not a treatment.
Frequently asked questions
How does the throat chakra affect a relationship?
The throat chakra shapes how a couple communicates: talking, listening and working through disagreements. When balanced, both partners dare to say what matters and feel heard. Underactive, unspoken things build up until they explode; overactive, everyone talks and nobody really listens. See how all seven chakras combine between two people in chakras for couples.
How do I unblock my throat chakra?
By using your voice: singing or humming, writing what you didn't say, then actually saying it, one small step at a time. Fish pose and ujjayi breathing also help. The key is to start with easy topics, with someone you trust.
Why does my throat tighten when I don't dare to speak?
Holding back words creates real tension in the throat, jaw and neck. In the chakra reading, it is the typical sign of an underactive throat chakra. Breathing slowly and saying, even softly, what matters often helps loosen that knot.
What color is the throat chakra?
Light blue, in the modern tradition. In the Indian texts, its lotus is a smoky purple, with a white circle like the full moon.
Does talking a lot mean an open throat chakra?
Not necessarily. Talking a lot without listening is rather the sign of an overactive throat chakra. A balanced throat chakra is as much about listening as about speaking.
