Crown chakra (Sahasrara): the chakra of meaning and values
The crown chakra, or Sahasrara, is the seventh and last chakra. It sits at the top of the head and governs the meaning you give your life, your values and the feeling of belonging to something greater than yourself. When it is balanced, life has meaning and stays grounded; underactive, you feel empty; overactive, you drift away from your body and daily life.
At ChakraDuo, the crown chakra is read from concrete questions about the meaning of your life, your values and how grounded you stay day to day, then then rated as underactive, balanced or overactive, with practices suited to each case. In a couple, it is also compared with your partner's.
It is the end of the chakra journey, from root to crown. But beware: a crown chakra only has value if it stays connected to the earth.
Crown chakra at a glance
| Sanskrit name | Sahasrara, "thousand-petaled" |

In The Description of the Six Chakras (1577), the text that set the chakra system, the crown is not even counted among the six: it is seen as a place apart, the goal of awakening. The text was translated by Arthur Avalon; the violet color comes from the modern West (see the origin of chakras).
What the crown chakra does in daily life
The crown chakra answers the question: "Why am I doing all this?" You find it in:
- meaning: feeling that your life has a direction and a purpose;
- values: knowing what really matters to you;
- spirituality, in the broad sense: religion, meditation, nature, art, wonder;
- belonging: feeling connected to others, to the world, to something greater.
You don't need to be religious to have a balanced crown chakra: an atheist can feel a deep sense of meaning, in nature or in a commitment.
Signs of an underactive crown chakra
An underactive crown chakra is a lack of meaning and of connection to something greater.
- In the body: weariness, a sense of "running on empty".
- In your emotions: emptiness, routine with no purpose, cynicism.
- In daily life: you do things out of habit or obligation, without knowing why.
- In relationships: closed to other worldviews, trouble sharing what matters.
Signs of an overactive crown chakra
An overactive crown chakra is a mind that drifts away from the body and the concrete.
- In the body: neglecting sleep, food and movement; feeling "in the clouds".
- In your emotions: detachment, trouble feeling ordinary emotions.
- In daily life: lots of spiritual reading or practice, while daily life (bills, tidying, appointments) is neglected.
- In relationships: rising above your loved ones' practical problems, escaping conflict through spirituality.

A balanced crown chakra
A balanced crown chakra shows up as embodied spirituality: you know what gives your life meaning, and that meaning shows up in concrete actions. You are open to other worldviews without losing your bearings. You feel connected without cutting yourself off from daily life.
The crown chakra in a relationship
In a couple, the crown chakra is about shared values: what brings you together beyond daily life.
- Both underactive: the couple works, but without a shared sense of purpose. You live side by side without knowing what deeply unites you.
- Both overactive: great shared ideals, but daily life is neglected. Practical decisions stay on hold.
- One underactive, the other overactive: one is deeply engaged in a spiritual quest, the other can't relate. It can be a false balance: each lives in a different world (see false balance in couples).
A simple habit for the couple: define together three values that guide your relationship, then one shared concrete action each week that brings them to life. To bring these values into daily life, try our 7 rituals for couples.
How to balance the crown chakra
An underactive crown chakra needs meaning and silence; an overactive crown chakra needs to come back down into the body.
Yoga pose: corpse pose (Savasana)
Lie on your back, legs and arms slightly apart, palms facing up, eyes closed. Release your whole body for 3 to 5 minutes.
- Underactive: think of something that truly matters to you, and let that feeling settle.
- Overactive: feel the weight of your body on the floor, one part after another, to stay grounded.

Breathing
- Underactive: a silent seated meditation, a few minutes a day, attention at the top of the head; finish with an "OM" or with silence.
- Overactive: breathe while feeling your feet and belly rather than your head; count 10 breaths while walking slowly.
To be guided, try our guided breathing exercise, already set to a calming rhythm.
Daily habits
If your crown chakra is underactive:
- Give yourself a moment of silence or nature every day, even 5 minutes.
- Share with someone close what gives your life meaning.
- Listen to a worldview different from yours, without trying to refute it.
- Lighten your daily life: give away or sell what you no longer use.
- Get involved in a cause or community that reflects who you are.
If your crown chakra is overactive:
- Follow each spiritual practice with a concrete action (tidying, exercise, cooking).
- Walk barefoot, garden, cook: anything that puts you back in touch with matter.
- Eat root vegetables (carrots, beets, sweet potatoes) and warm, regular meals: they help bring you back down to earth.
- Stay present to your loved ones' practical needs.
- Hike up to a viewpoint: feel the effort in your legs, then the vastness.

Affirmations
- Underactive: "I am part of something greater than myself."
- Overactive: "I am not my thoughts: my body has a say too."
A reminder: a lasting feeling of emptiness, a loss of interest in everything, or on the contrary the impression of being cut off from reality, are signals to take seriously: talk to a doctor or psychologist. Chakra work is a support, not a treatment.
Frequently asked questions
How does the crown chakra affect a relationship?
The crown chakra shapes a couple's shared values: what brings you together beyond daily life. When balanced, it gives the relationship meaning and a common course. Underactive, you live side by side without knowing what truly unites you; overactive, big ideals take over practical life. See how all seven chakras combine between two people in chakras for couples.
How do I open my crown chakra?
Through silence and meaning: a few minutes of meditation or nature each day, reflecting on what really matters to you, and sharing it. But a crown chakra opens well only if the other chakras, especially the root, are solid: you don't build a roof without foundations.
Do I need to be religious to work on my crown chakra?
No. The crown chakra concerns the meaning you give your life, whatever it is: a faith, values, a commitment, wonder at nature. Everyone experiences it in their own way.
Can the crown chakra be too open?
Yes: that is an overactive crown chakra. You live in ideas or spirituality to the point of neglecting your body, daily life and loved ones. The answer is not to close it, but to strengthen grounding: the body, nature, concrete actions.
What color is the crown chakra?
Violet, in the modern tradition, sometimes white or gold. In the Indian texts, it is a luminous white lotus with a thousand petals.
