How to set boundaries without feeling guilty

By Stéphane · Updated on October 12, 2026 · 6 min read

Setting boundaries means saying clearly what you accept and what you don't, calmly and without long explanations. Guilt is normal at first: it comes from the fear of disappointing people, not from doing anything wrong. A boundary is set in three steps: feel it, say it simply, then hold it.

A boundary is not a wall. It's more like a door: you decide what comes in and what stays outside. It protects your energy, and it makes your relationships healthier, because people finally know where you stand. In the chakra tradition, setting boundaries brings two chakras together: the solar plexus chakra (daring to stand up for yourself) and the heart chakra (staying kind).

How to set boundaries without feeling guilty

Why is it so hard to set boundaries?

If saying no is hard for you, you're far from alone. The most common reasons:

  • the fear of disappointing or of rejection: you worry the other person will love you less;
  • upbringing: you learned that you should help, please others and not make a fuss;
  • the need to be useful: doing favors reassures you and gives you a place;
  • the fear of conflict: giving in seems easier than discussing;
  • not knowing where your own limits are, because you never asked yourself.

Over time, the result is tiredness, resentment, and the feeling that your efforts are simply expected. And sometimes a sudden explosion, when it all finally becomes too much.

Signs that you need stronger boundaries

  • you say yes, then regret it right away;
  • some encounters leave you drained of energy;
  • you resent people for "taking advantage", without ever having told them;
  • you over-explain when you turn something down;
  • your own needs always come last;
  • you carry other people's emotions as if they were your own.

The link with the chakras

Two chakras work together when it comes to boundaries:

  • the solar plexus chakra, the center of willpower and self-assertion. Underactive, you don't dare to say no. Overactive, you set rigid, sometimes hurtful boundaries;
  • the heart chakra, the center of love given and received. When it gives too much, you forget yourself for others and burn out.

A balanced boundary combines both: the firmness of the solar plexus and the softness of the heart. Neither a doormat nor a fortress. To see how a heart that gives too much shows up in a relationship, read the heart chakra in relationships.

How to set boundaries: the 5-step method

1. Notice the boundary in your body

A crossed boundary is often felt before it is thought: a knot in your stomach, tension in your shoulders, a reluctant "yes". This signal is precious. Next time, pause for a second and ask yourself: "Do I really want to say yes?"

2. Buy yourself time

Nothing forces you to answer right away. "Let me check and get back to you tomorrow" gives you time to know what you really want. It's the most useful phrase for anyone who says yes on reflex.

3. Say no simply

A clear, kind and short no is better than a long justification, which invites negotiation. One reason is enough, and sometimes none.

4. Offer an alternative, if you want to

"I can't help on Saturday, but I can on Sunday morning." An alternative shows goodwill without giving up your boundary. It is not mandatory.

5. Hold the boundary

This is often the hardest part. The other person may insist, be surprised or disappointed. Calmly repeat the same sentence, without adding more. Their disappointment is not your fault: it's a normal reaction to change.

Ready-to-use phrases for saying no

The situation A possible phrase
One favor too many "I won't be able to this time, but thank you for thinking of me."
A coworker who oversteps "I'm finishing this project first. I can look at yours on Thursday."
Someone close who insists "I heard you, and my answer is still no."
A hurtful remark "What you just said hurt me. I'd like us to talk to each other differently."
A need for quiet "I need an evening to myself. See you tomorrow?"
A topic you'd rather avoid "I'd rather not talk about that."

Adapt them to the way you speak: a boundary sounds better in your own words.

Setting boundaries in a relationship

In a couple, boundaries protect love rather than push it away. They can be about time for yourself, money, your partner's family, intimacy or sharing chores. Without boundaries, one partner gives too much and ends up making demands, while the other feels in debt: fertile ground for a false balance.

To talk about it together, choose a calm moment, talk about your need rather than your partner's faults, and listen to their boundaries too. The techniques for better communication in relationships help a lot.

What about the guilt?

The guilt that follows a first no is normal: it comes from an old habit, not from doing anything wrong. It fades with every boundary you set, as you see that the relationship holds. A few simple ways to ease it:

  • remind yourself why you set this boundary (your health, your time, your energy);
  • breathe slowly for a minute, one hand on your belly: our guided breathing exercise is made for this;
  • notice that the people who respect you accept your boundaries, even if they are surprised at first.

Setting boundaries also builds self-confidence: every calm no shows that your needs matter.

When someone doesn't respect your boundaries

If someone repeatedly ignores your boundaries after you have expressed them clearly, it says more about them than about you. You can then step back, limit contact or get support. If you feel unsafe, physically or emotionally, talk to a professional or a support organization.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set boundaries without feeling guilty?

Accept that guilt is normal at first, say no simply without a long justification, and remind yourself why this boundary matters to you. The guilt fades with every boundary you set.

How do I say no nicely?

Say thank you, say no clearly and offer an alternative if you want to: "Thank you for thinking of me, I won't be able to this time." A calm tone is enough to stay kind.

Why is it so hard for me to say no?

Often because of the fear of disappointing others, of rejection or of conflict, and because many people learn very early to put others first. It's a habit, and habits can change.

Is setting boundaries selfish?

No. A boundary protects your energy and makes the relationship more honest. People who never set boundaries often end up drained or full of resentment, which harms the relationship even more.

How do I set boundaries in my relationship?

Choose a calm moment, talk about your need ("I need...") rather than your partner's faults, and listen to their boundaries too. Clear boundaries make a couple more peaceful.

Which chakra is linked to boundaries?

Mainly the solar plexus chakra, the center of self-assertion, together with the heart chakra, which keeps things kind. A balanced boundary combines firmness and kindness.
