Lack of self-confidence: where it comes from and how to build it

By Stéphane · Updated on October 12, 2026 · 6 min read

Self-confidence is the belief that you can act and cope with what comes your way. A lack of self-confidence most often comes from repeated criticism, failures that were never processed, or constant comparison with others. It is rebuilt through action: small challenges you succeed at, a kinder inner voice and clear boundaries.

The good news: self-confidence is not a fixed personality trait. It rises and falls with the seasons of life, tiredness and the people around you. And it can be trained, like a muscle. In the chakra tradition, it is linked to the solar plexus chakra, the center of willpower and self-esteem.

Lack of self-confidence: where it comes from and how to build it

What is self-confidence?

Self-confidence is the conviction that you can act, decide and handle situations. It is often confused with self-esteem, which is close but different:

Self-confidence Self-esteem
The question "Can I do this?" "Am I worth it?"
What it covers Action and skills The whole person
How it grows Through action and success Through acceptance, from others and from yourself

The two feed each other. You can feel confident at work and lack self-esteem in love, or the other way around.

Psychologist Albert Bandura called this belief in your ability to succeed at a task "self-efficacy". His work shows that it grows first through experiences of success, even small ones (Bandura, 1977).

Signs of a lack of self-confidence

  • you hesitate for a long time before deciding, and often ask others what they think;
  • you avoid speaking up in a group, for fear of saying something silly;
  • you play down your successes ("I got lucky") and magnify your mistakes;
  • you compare yourself a lot, and the comparison rarely works in your favor;
  • you find it hard to say no, for fear of letting people down;
  • you keep postponing the projects that matter to you: "later, when I have time".

Having a few of these signs is very common. They become a problem when they stop you from doing what matters to you.

Where does a lack of self-confidence come from?

There is almost never a single cause. The most common ones:

  • repeated criticism, in childhood, at school or at work: in the end, you start believing it;
  • a failure or a humiliation that was never processed, and that you keep replaying in your head;
  • constant comparison, made worse by social media, where everyone shows their best side;
  • perfectionism: if only perfect counts, everything else looks like failure;
  • a relationship that puts you down, among friends, in the family or in a couple;
  • tiredness and stress, which make everything heavier and feed self-doubt.

The link with the solar plexus chakra

The solar plexus chakra, located above the navel, is associated with willpower, the power to act and self-esteem. It is often pictured as an inner sun. It can go off balance in two directions:

  • underactive: you doubt, you don't dare, you let others decide for you. This is the classic lack of self-confidence;
  • overactive: you want to control everything, you struggle with criticism, you need to be right. This is often a confident front that hides deep doubt.

In both cases, the goal is the same: a calm confidence, with nothing to hide and nothing to prove. To recognize these two states, see also the signs of a blocked chakra.

How to build self-confidence: 8 practical steps

1. A small daily challenge

Every day, do one thing that takes a little courage: ask a question in a meeting, call instead of texting, share your opinion. Not a big feat, a small step. Confidence is rebuilt by piling up successes.

2. The success journal

In the evening, write down three things you did well that day, even tiny ones. The brain remembers failures more easily than successes: this journal rebalances the scales.

3. Talk to yourself like someone you love

Notice your critical inner voice ("you're not good enough", "you'll never make it"). Ask yourself: "Would I talk like this to someone I love?" Then rephrase: "This is hard, and I'm making progress."

4. Swap "perfect" for "good enough"

Before starting a task, set a "good enough" level, and stop when you reach it. Finishing something imperfect builds more confidence than never finishing something perfect.

5. Compare yourself with yourself, not with others

Instead of comparing yourself with someone else, compare yourself with who you were a year ago. What have you learned, overcome, achieved? That is the only fair comparison.

6. Say no once a week

A small no, kind and without a long explanation. Every calm no shows that your needs matter, and that the relationship still holds. Our article on how to set boundaries without guilt walks you through it.

7. Posture and breathing

Before a stressful moment, stand tall, shoulders relaxed, and breathe slowly into your belly for a minute. Box breathing is easy to remember: 4 seconds to breathe in, hold, breathe out, hold. You can also follow our guided breathing exercise.

8. Surround yourself with people who lift you up

Notice who makes you feel bigger and who makes you feel smaller. Spend a little more time with the people who help you grow. Confidence is also fed by how others see you.

The hidden factors that lower confidence

Self-confidence doesn't only live in your head. It reacts to everything going on around you:

  • sleep: after a bad night, you doubt more and dare less. Our sleep calculator helps you find the right bedtime;
  • stress at work, especially when you feel judged;
  • the people around you: a hurtful remark weighs more than you think;
  • the body: a lack of movement and energy shows in your mood too.

Before "working on" your confidence, check whether one of these factors weighs heavily right now. Lightening it is sometimes the biggest step.

Self-confidence in a relationship

In a couple, each partner's self-confidence matters. The partner who lacks confidence often lets the other decide, which can create a false balance: one carries everything, the other fades into the background. A partner can help by encouraging without taking over, and by celebrating small steps. To talk about all this without hurting each other, see our article on better communication in relationships.

When to get help

If a lack of confidence keeps you from working, loving or going out, or if it comes with deep sadness or anxiety, talk to a doctor or a psychologist. Cognitive behavioral therapy in particular has a strong track record for rebuilding confidence. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness: it is an act of self-confidence.

Frequently asked questions

How can I build self-confidence quickly?

There is no instant fix, but one small successful challenge a day brings results within a few weeks. Before a specific moment, a minute of slow breathing and an upright posture help you feel calmer.

What is the difference between self-confidence and self-esteem?

Self-confidence is about what you feel able to do. Self-esteem is about the value you give yourself as a person. Each one strengthens the other.

Why do I lack self-confidence?

Most often because of a build-up: criticism you received, failures that were never processed, comparison with others, perfectionism. Tiredness and stress make the doubt worse.

Can you have too much self-confidence?

Yes. Excessive confidence that rejects criticism and wants to control everything often hides deep doubt. In the chakra reading, this is an overactive solar plexus.

Which chakra is linked to self-confidence?

The solar plexus chakra, the third chakra, located above the navel. It is associated with willpower, the power to act and self-esteem.

How long does it take to rebuild self-confidence?

The first changes are often felt after three to six weeks of regular small challenges. Solid confidence is built over several months.
